CIVIL IDENTITY OF STUDENT YOUTH IN UKRAINE
Abstract
The article focuses on the study and understanding of the awareness of student youth in Ukraine regarding the concept of civic identity as a key element that guarantees the consolidation of Ukrainian society.
The purpose of the article is to study and understand the awareness of Ukrainian student youth regarding the concept of civic identity. Achieving the set goal required solving the following tasks: 1) to find out the interpretation of the concept of “civic identity” by Ukrainian scientists; 2) to analyse the results of a survey of students of higher education institutions of Ukraine regarding the understanding of the essence of the analyzed concept; 3) to highlight some effective, practically implemented methods of formation of the civic identity of student youth.
In the research, the following methods are applied: analysis and systematization of psychological and pedagogical sources on the issue under study; survey of Ukrainian students regarding the concept of civic identity; study and generalization of advanced elements of pedagogical experience in the formation of the civic identity of student youth. The interpretation of the concept “civic identity” by Ukrainian scholars is considered. It is outlined that the formation of the civic identity ensures self-actualization and self-expression in the social group of compatriots and allows to influence the civil society by showing political and civic activities. The analysis of the conducted survey of students of higher education institutions of Ukraine regarding the understanding of the essence of the analyzed concept is carried out.
By analyzing the results of the conducted survey, it is established that the majority of respondents have a fairly complete idea of the essence of civic identity, which helps them better understand themselves, strengthens their self-esteem and sense of belonging, and also defines life principles and goals, forms an understanding of the surrounding world.
It is emphasized that understanding one’s own civic identity is able to: release personality potential for lifelong learning and self-improvement; help to go beyond the usual assumptions and form new thoughts and a new system of cultural coordinates that allow you to better understand yourself and others; in the longer term, to promote the development of critical thinking and strategic analysis skills in various spheres of one’s life. Some advanced methods of civic identity formation implemented in practice are highlighted, which contribute to the actualization of civic values of students and encouraged them to discover and improve communication skills and the ability of active interpersonal interaction and active listening.
