POLYCULTURAL PERSONALITY FORMATION IN POLYCULTURAL SETTING OF HIGHER EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTIONS
Abstract
The purpose of the article is to highlight the main streams of the formation of a student’s polycultural personality in the educational process of higher educational institutions. In the study, the author exploited a set of methods, among which the priority was given to analysis, synthesis, comparison and systematization of material on the formation of a polycultural personality of students of higher educational institutions. Polycultural education is considered a modern innovative pedagogical means, which is realized through the gradual development of the personality from the I-ethnic to the I-civic and I-global personality. It is stated that the content of polycultural education is the familiarization of young people with ethnic, national and world culture, the formation of a polycultural view of the world, the development of global consciousness. It is focused that the polycultural pedagogy should permeate all levels of the education system, and higher education is an important link in the continuous process of developing the polycultural personality. The latter is viewed as the subject of a polylogue of cultures with an active life position, a developed sense of empathy and tolerance, emotional stability, the ability to live in peace and harmony with people as representatives of different cultural groups. It is concluded that a polycultural personality is an integrative characteristic that determines the ability and readiness of an individual based on a dialogue, to actively interact with representatives of other cultures. The attributive properties of a polycultural personality are humanity, an orientation toward universal human values, critical thinking, tolerance, and polycultural identity. Only this type of a personality can fully realize himself/herself in the global world, regardless of nationality and cultural affiliation. Responding to the challenge of the modern world, the education system must instill in youth optimal adaptive models of behavior in a multi-ethnic and cultural environment, including the formation of polycultural thinking, a sense of solidarity, tolerance, intercultural communication skills, and the ability to make a productive dialogue. The development of a polycultural personality as a citizen of the country, Europe, and the world should become a priority task in the modern educational process.
